Congrats to Fresno State

Yesterday, Fresno State became the lowest seed to win a National Championship in any men's collegiate sport. They give schools in lower, non-major conferences across the country hope that the fairy tale story does exist and miracles do come true. They faced elimation five times on their way to the title, and seemed to scratch, claw, kick, bite, and do anything else they had to do in order to prevail. Hats off to the these kids who never ever quit or lost belief. Congats to the Underdogs, err, Bulldogs of Fresno State and their impressive National Championship.

Drinkers invite crocodile into Australian pub

Local regulars to an australian pub noticed a crocodile outside and picked it up and brought it inside for their regular drinking session.

The saltwater crocodile was only 24 inches long so it wasn't about ot eat anyone, but the men taped its snout nonetheless, took some photoes, and then put it in a box on the counter. It's guessed that the croc might have escaped from a farm that was a few miles away. Animal officials eventually came to the bar and took the croc back to the farm.

That would be so cool. They should have kept it as a pet....because that's totally realistic.

Maglev - America's Fastest Train, Future Transportation?

Thanks to a $45 million dollar infusion from a recent government bill signed by President Bush in June, a magnetic, levitating train called the Maglev could be your choice of transportation between Ontario and Las Vegas in 5-10 years. In an article on MSNBC, Jasmin Aline Persch discusses the potential, capabilities, and issues associated with the Maglev.
The train would essentially levitate using electro magnets and in doing so would avoid significant infrastructure maintenance overhead since there would be no contact between the rails and the train. The train would travel at a maximum of 310 mph, an average of 180 mph, and could compete with air travel. A ticket from Anaheim to Las Vegas can cost about $150, but, according to the American Magline Group, a ticket for the same route on a Maglev would cost about $55.
All in all it seems like a great idea. Who wouldn't want to float along at 180 mph and pay 1/3 the cost to get to Vegas? although, that thing better be locked down somehow....

Speaking of Rolling, High-Rolling that is, this blog called How to Roll is targeting guys with and without money. "How To Roll is a new blog for men about money. We deal in upgrades, bonuses, exclusivity and extraordinary experiences. We live in style, but we don't cover style -- no shopping, no grooming. Ever."

It could be called the Man Blog, but this blog is already called the Man blog. So the How to Roll blog will stay just that. It covers Cars, Travel, Food, Sports, Real Estate, Access, Sports, and bunch of other stuff. The autos section is at the top, most likely because it's the coolest.

Kobe, Please Describe the Flavor

Ok, so a couple days ago the next chapter to the Shaq vs. Kobe saga was written. While at a nightclub in NYC, Shaq got onstage and took the mic and started freestyling. He began by saying Kobe couldn't do it without him in the NBA Finals, and finished with the crowd cheering loudly and proudly at the expense of Kobe Bryant. Here's the video, enjoy the Big Diesel and his flow.

Pollution Tarnishes Olympic Games

With the Summer Olympics fast approaching, concern for the air quality in China is still a major issue. Athletes competing in outdoor, long distance events such as the marathon and some cycling events are having to adjust their training and preperation in order to account for the worst air quality on the planet. Air pollution in China accounts for 11 million outpatient visits a year. That's one person out of five that has to go see a doctor in a hospital because the air has made them sick. Pollution is also responsible for 440,000 hospitalized bed days a year, as well as at least 10,000 deaths. Pollution is a serious problem for all people living in China, and it will be very imteresting to see how the quality of air affects competition during the games.

Shaping Perception

How do you want people to see you? Funny? Intelligent? Kind? Witty? The way we conduct ourselves everyday, every minute, with every word from our mouths, shapes the way others perceive us. I've often heard the expression, "I don't care what other people think about me."
What a truly sad statement this is. It implies a rather egocentric way of viewing relationships with others. If lots of people think you're a jerk, it's probably not without cause. Whats further, if you sincerely did not care that everyone thinks you're a jerk, you're only confirming their beliefs. Oh yeah, I forgot; you don't care. The truth is , I think there are actually very few people out there who don't care at all what other's think about them. Generally, people want to fit in and be liked. However, you can be liked and still not have a very good reputation. In order to have a positive image, one must conduct themselves with honor, respect, class, humility, and courteousness in everything they do, with all people they meet (not just powerful people). Being percieved as a "good guy/girl" amongst your friends, bosses, people you want to like you, etc. and showing no respect to bus-boys, shoe shiners, fast food workers, etc. doesn't really make you a good person. It means you can turn it on when you want to, but normally choose to keep it off. It's easy to shape a positive perception of yourself when your trying to; the mark of a person with a truly positive image is one who doesn't know how to turn it off. Life is a strange thing where anything can happen. Maybe in a couple years the people you never gave the time of day will soon be the ones you want to impress. It is essential that we treat others, all others regardless, with class and respect in order for other's perception of us to be how we'd truly like.

Woman Found, Sat Dead In Front of TV for 42 Years

From Dailyrecord.co.uk, a Croatian woman was found dead in her apartment, after sitting in front of her TV (dead) for 42 years. "Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cup of tea before sitting in her favourite armchair in front of her black and white television. Croatian police said she was last seen by neighbours in 1966, when she would have been 42 years old. Her neighbours thought she had moved out of her flat in the capital, Zagreb.
But she was found by police and bailiffs who had broken in to help the authorities establish who owned the flat."

After seeing this, I don't think I'll go on that summer trip to Croatia.

Video Games Killed the Television Star

I love video games. I do I do I do. Ever since I was a kid, when Nintendo first came out, video games have been a favorite activity amongst American youth. Today, the video game craze is all over the world. X-box Live connects gamers all across the globe in real time. One could even argue that video games have made the most advances of any technological gadget in the last 25 years (you'd have a tough time arguing against cell phones and the desktop computer, but what the hell). Today's video game systems are in fact highly specialized computers capable of much more than just gaming. It's also become a huge platform for marketers and adervertisers to promote their products and services to a rather specific, young demographic. So today, I salute you video games and the countless hours I've spent wasting my time and youth because of you. Thank you for calloused finger tips, pimples, and a general lack of female attention.

Perfect for those Long Days at the Office

Feel like you're in dire need of a release from the confines of your cubicle and the monotonous pile of work sitting next to you?  If you answered yes, then pick up your Nerf Guns and ignite an office war that is sure to give you just the release you're looking for.  Just please make sure to invite the janitorial crew to join you.

Have it your way... but don't get crazy

Don't you just love it when you go to your friendly fast food establishment, place an order, and get treated like you've done something wrong? Oh what a joy it is. Having it your way means it's ok to order a burger without pickles, not change everything around to suit your dietary preferences. Your probablly better off just placing a normal order and making the necessary changes yourself. Because lets face it, they're going to screw your order up anyway.

Australian Athletes to Skip Beijing Ceremony

Many countries' athletic programs are choosing to keep athletes away from Beijing for as long as possible until they have to compete in their events. "Athletics Australia says competitors will stay in a Hong Kong holding camp until a few days before their events.
Performance manager Max Binnington said: "Anything more than five or six days and athletes inevitably end up with some sort of respiratory problem.
"So many sports who don't have to be there early are choosing not to go in.""

Athletes will miss the opening ceremony due to these health concerns.

Germany Triumphs, Will Play Portugal

With a smashing 25 yard free kick goal from World Class Captain Michael Ballack the Germans have advanced to the Quarterfinals in Euro 2008 and will face 2004 runners-up Portugal in what could be one of the best if not The best match of the tournament.

"The goal ensured there was no repeat of what is known as "The Miracle of Cordoba," when Austria shocked Germany 3-2 to knock the defending champions out of the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Ballack said just the talk of a possible repeat had made his team determined to prevail." from Fox Sports

Besides Ballack's crushing goal the game was not without other excitement Mario Gomez had a "glaring miss" and both coaches were sent off the field for arguing with the fourth official.

Here's Germany vs. Austria highlights

Mental Toughness

On the heels of one of the most incredibly dramatic weekends in US Open history, I came across this commercial which stands as a testament to Tiger Woods' mental toughness under pressure. The PGA has experienced a substantial increase in viewers since Tiger first appeared on the scene as a pro in 1996, and he has captivated the golfing world with his every move--helping to create a new breed of golf fans. Now more than ever before youngsters are turning to the links, and many of the commercials displayed during PGA events specifically target this group.

Kick It like Kung Fu

As the newest member of the Digital Dojo, I found it only fitting to post a video of the craziest high-flying kicks, spins, and filps I've ever seen. Mixed Martial Arts fighting grown incredibly popular, and more and more people are gaining in interest in hand to hand combat. UFC fights are played all over the internet and gaining views at a staggering rate. Traffic to sites like tapout.com, sherdog.com, mmafighting.com, and mixedmartialarts.com will likely raise the eyebrows of advertisers. In addtion, almost all fans of the sport are under 30 so the potential for further growth is still there. This guy could probablly take out a few people in just one of his kicks. Enjoy.

Intelligence = No God

this is interesting. People who have a high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) are apparently less likely to believe in God. An article on Telegraph.co.uk had this "Professor Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University, said many more members of the "intellectual elite" considered themselves atheists than the national average."
Lynn's paper, written for the academic journal Intelligence, concluded that a decline in religious activity was directly linked to an increase in average intelligence. "But the conclusions - in a paper for the academic journal Intelligence - have been branded "simplistic" by critics." Read more.

Woman Rejected by Modeling Agencies Crowned Ms London

this is fantastic. the modeling/fashion industry just seems like it has gotten so far out of whack with the real world that it doesn't know what's beautiful anymore. This girl, Leah Green, according to http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ in an article, is a size 12 and was turned down by modeling agencies. At a size 12, Leah is apparently two sizes smaller than the average british woman, but modeling agencies rejected her saying she was "too fat" and needed to lose weight. However, she beat about 200 other girls to become crowned Ms. London recently. from dailymail:

"The London College of Fashion graduate (Leah), who works as a design assistant at French Connection, said the industry was fixated with thin models and was responsible for many girls developing eating disorders.
"I helped out with London Fashion Week last year and many of the models looked like they were about to keel over and die," she said."

The sad thing is, this is all too often true in the modeling world today. Girls starve themselves or result to eating disorders to achieve the size demanded today by modeling agencies, which (in the US) is around a 2 or less. And at that size, a lot of people could touch a thumb to finger around a model's arm right below armpit, or wrap hands (thumbthumb to fingertipfingertip) around a model's thigh, or even still wrap hands (same) around a model's waist. yes, it is very frightening.

According to an article on NewYorkTimes dot com, it is being proffered that designers are contributing to the demand for ever-thinner models. While this is still in speculation, it begs the question, why? Why would a designer want a thinner model? Perhaps it's easier to fit/make clothes for a thinner model. However, if your clothes are meant to be worn by real women, why not try them on more size-applicable, real-world representations? Who knows. Personally i've heard from a few guys who went to a victoria's secret photo shoot and came back expressing complete dislike for the way the girls looked. Apparently they were so skinny and without any sensuality or voluptuousness that they weren't attractive in real life, but in the pictures with photo editing software it's easy to make them look like they actually have boobs or their features are fully appealing. And the worst thing is that real woman who are Really beautiful/hot/sexy/attractive etc are being put down and rejected by this false representation of beauty and fashion, and are therefore made to feel inadequate. Hopefully someday we'll return to the days of true beauty. Check it out, here's the two women the modeling world might want to emulate:

Sony's PS3 finally becoming viable

According to this re-review of the PS3 by Ben Kuchera on ArsTechnica, the Playstation 3 is quickly taking advantage of its technological features to promote itself as the prominent gaming console on the market. Or at least the cheapest blu-ray player...

The Playstation 3 has the hardware to compensate for any new techonological changes in the market place and is sure to gain momentum as time goes on. Gamers so far have shunned the system because of issues with its software. The first software to come out with the system denied users trueHD abilities to name one issue. And although it was blu-ray compatible, when the PS3 first came out the format wars vs. Blu-ray and HD DVD were right in the thick of it.

Today the PS3, due to the software updates made within the last year, can handle hi-def video and full blu-ray (and now Blu-ray has won the format wars). The console is sure to continue to rise in popularity as Blu-ray builds momentum in households and game developers take advantage of the powerful technology inside the PS3.

UK Eco-house Sold for world record £7.2m!

New environmentally friendly house sells for millions..

"It’s not all doom and gloom for the UK property market: in the face of the country’s slowing or depreciating prices, Sarah Featherstone’s cutting-edge green home has sold for a record-breaking £7.2million, or $14.2million USD! The building, known as Orchid House, is one of the key homes on Lower Mill Estate, a project to turn a disused gravel pit into a beautiful 450-acre nature reserve.
Possibly to subsidize the £3,000 per square foot cost of the property, the building aims to generate more energy than it consumes, making use of geothermal heating. The house can be adapted to any occasion, be it a family holiday or a large reception, due to its flexible living spaces. Inhabitants and visitors to the property can be entertained by the glass-sided badger set installed in the garden."

What's a Leonberger?

Have you ever heard of a Leonberger? Bred to look like a lion by the citizens of Leonberg, Germany, the Leonberger is quickly growing in popularity around the world. The best records indicate the Leonberger was declared in 1846 as a legitimate breed by entrepreneurial dog owner/trader Heinrich Essig. It is said that Essig paid much attention to marketing and vision when it came to trading canines, but lacked a knack for keeping in touch with the details. Obviously these days marketers have slews of programs and methodologies for tracking information and data related to the products and services they promote, but back in the day people like Essig just had to wing it!

The Leonberger is thought to have come about by the cross breeding of many large dogs including the St. Bernard, Pyrenean Mountain, and Landseer dogs. Dog-enthusiasts familiar with these dogs will understand that the combination of these breeds would yield a dog that is white, black, or brown. Well, it is obvious, due to the signature golden brown color of the Leonberger today, that other breeds were involved in the creation of the eventual Leonberger.

Regardless of the confusion as to how the Leonberger breed came about, its history is quite fascinating. Because of Essig's marketing skill, and his family's support in training and maintaining his kennel, the early Leonbergers became very popular and were shipped all around the world to high-paying dog enthusiasts. Reports claim Leonbergers were prizes of royalty and were pets of "Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Prince of Wales, Emperor Napoleon II, Garibaldi, the King of Belgium, Bismarck, King Umberto of Italy, and the Czar of Russia. They were exported as far away as the United States, England, Newfoundland, and Japan to the wealthy who desired large fashionable dogs." http://www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com/breedhistory.aspx

The Leonberger is truly an extraordinary breed. Throughout the years it has almost become extinct twice, the most dangerous time being that of WWI when two men, Herr Stadelmann and Herr Otto Josenhans, scoured Germany for Leonbergers and found only 25. Of the 25, only 5 were suitable for breeding. From these 5 the breed developed into what it was today. Leonberger clubs and organization have fostered the lifeblood of the breed, including the most prominent Deutsche Club für Leonberger Hunde. From this and other organizations specific breed characteristics have been nailed down in order to ensure the unmuddied continuation of the breed.
Today Leonberger clubs are all over the world and owners get together exclusively to meet and let their dogs "do their thang". To read more about Leonbergers visit http://www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com/ . There you can learn all about this wonderful dog breed and how it is growing in popularity.

Spore, teasing gamers

Highly anticipated video game Spore continues to tease gaming enthusiasts with pictures and video.

http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9957883-1.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

From Will Wright, creator of The Sims, Spore is one of the most anticipated video games to come out in years. The game allows players to create a species from the beginnings of the primordial ooze, foster its development into a fully functional being, and try to conquer the universe. There will be five phases in the game: Tidal Pool Phase, Creature Phase, Tribal Phase, Civilization Phase, and Space Phase. In the first two phases, players create and develop their species physically. In the last three phases, players develop the cultural, social, and strategically minded aspects of their species.

the most unique aspect of the game is its interactivity and online capabilities. While each player will develop its species uniquely in a guided methodology, eventually players will interact together, battling for power of the universe.

Google Street View - Taking over the World

In April 2008 Google fully integrated its new feature, Street View, into Google Maps. Street View allows people to view the street (simple as that!). Currently, people can click street view and "visit" over 40 cities in the United States. Google plans to expand continually until the whole world is mapped.

When it was launched in May 2007, Street View only included 5 cities. Today, Google streetcars (cars mounted with tons of wide-angle cameras) have been seen all over the world from Spain to Japan to New Zealand.

Google wants to expand currently into Canada but privacy issues are flying in the face of progress. Issues with public images being displayed that people don't want broadcasted to the universe are arising, and Google is having trouble with innappropriate content that is inadvertently added to the service. Medical Marijuana, legal and illegal

While medical marijuana is legal in California, federal law still bans the sale of it. Still, many entrepreneurs see business opportunities in the budding market for marijuana.

"Setting up a clinic “can cost as much as a hundred grand,” Ms. Wells reports. The equipment, the cuttings from which plants are grown and office space all tend to be expensive. And from there, the costs only grow, mostly in the form of legal fees. Many clinics keep lawyers on retainer.
Nonetheless, “this is the business model of the future,” says JoAnna La Force of Farmacy, an herbal remedy shop in Southern California. Ms. LaForce says her business is close to breaking even (medicalmarijuanafarmacy.com)"

Pirates?

No this isn't Johnny Depp. Pirates are still at large on a busy trading route near Somalia that links Europe and Asia. The U.N. announced today that they have authorized foreign navies to engage the pirates. I'm not sure what was holding them back in the first place, or why they needed the U.N.'s permission, but anyhoo...

"Already this year Somali bandits have carried out around 30 attacks - including three last week - on fishing trawlers, tugboats, cargo ships transporting food aid and even a luxury French yacht."

Home for Sale. Location: MARS

While environmentalists are saying we better save the earth because it's going to hell, astronautical organizations are preparing to go to hell. More to the point, organizations like NASA are investigating thoroughly what it would take to get to the red planet, Mars. The intense conditions make it very difficult to predict what could happen to an expedition, so researchers are running tests to simulate what could happen, in order to prepare for the Great Journey. Aiding and egging them on is a 7,000 member multinational group called the Mars Society who is determined to reach the "New World."

"The European Space Agency and the Russian Institute of Biomedial Problems are scheduled to run a joint 520-day mock Mars expedition this year aimed to study the effects of extreme isolation and confinement on 12 volunteers."

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/06/02/space.psych/index.html?eref=edition_technology

The mock expedition is designed to create an atmosphere that will be most like a real expedition to Mars. Researchers hope to understand how team members on the trip will react psychologically..."they will not be able to receive surprise presents, like special cookies or favorite movies, which are often brought to the space station on supply shuttles when someone starts feeling homesick or maybe a little blue. Thus, decking out the Martian-bound craft with family photographs, special trinkets, books and even plants will be crucial for a mostly monotonous extraterrestrial road trip that will bring a whole new meaning to the "are we there yet?" question.
If someone becomes sick -- either physically or mentally -- the crew has to be ready to cope with that, too.
"If someone gets suicidal, you have to take care of it on board," Kanas said. Mission Control might also have to make some tough calls, like whether to tell an astronaut about a death in his or her family or other tragedies back home.
Yet the big unknown, according to Kanas, does not involve who astronauts will not be able to talk to or what gifts they will not be able to get, but instead what they will not be able to clearly see: planet Earth.
Kanas has even coined a term for the situation: the "Earth out of view" phenomenon.
"Nobody in the history of mankind has ever experienced the Earth as a pale, insignificant blue dot in the sky," he said. "What that might do to a crew member, nobody knows.""

Zero Emissions UniMotorcycle

On Popscience, a 19 year old at MIT thinks he has the answer to the harmful emmissions caused by millions of motorbikes. On a trip to China, Ben Gulak was disgusted by an incredibly thick haze of smog hanging over the city near Beijing Int'l Airport. When he saw the amount of motorcycles in the city, he understood that part of the problem was the large amount of dangerous emissions being spewed out by the machines. He decided to try and figure out how to solve the eco-unfriendly problem.

In comes the Uno. Built with two wheels for stabilization and power, the Uno is Ben's vision of the ultimately clean and compact motorcycle. "When he got home, Gulak drew up a plan for an all-electric unicycle that would emit no fumes and, he figured, be easier to weave through crowded streets than a standard two-wheeler. To give the ride more stability, he put the wheels side-by-side just an inch apart and directly under the rider, who accelerates by leaning forward, as he would on a Segway. When the rider leans into a turn, the inside wheel lifts and the outside wheel lowers, so both stay firmly on the ground." Article from popsci

Kimbo Slice, Next Mike Tyson?

Kevin Ferguson, better known as the Youtube star Kimbo Slice, captured another win for his Ultimate Fighting championship career stats on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Touted by Rolling Stone as the "King of the Web Brawlers", the now MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter is 3-0 in his fights vs Ray Mercer, David "Tank" Abbott, and James Thompson.

Born in the Bahammas in 1976, Kimbo has promoted himself through online Youtube videos of his streetfights. He has been referred to as one of the closest things to Mike Tyson that's been seen in a while. At 6'2" 240 lbs, Kimbo is pure muscle. Through sites like Youtube, he has gathered something of an underground following. His streetfights are watched by thousands (if not millions) every week.
From Wikipedia: "On May 31, 2008, Kimbo fought in the main event of the first ever mixed martial arts event shown on prime time network television, EliteXC: Primetime. Kimbo's opponent James Thompson won the first two rounds on total points[8] [9] [10], although one judge had each fighter winning a round and even points, by repeatedly taking down Slice and grounding and pounding. In the opening seconds of the third round, Kimbo threw a haymaker to Thompson's left ear, ruptured his cauliflower ear. This was soon followed by three unanswered punches to a standing Thompson, which led to a referee stoppage."
Currently Slice lives in Miami, has 6 kids, and is engaged.
