David Blaine's Real Magic Trick

David Blaine performed another great feat of magic last week...no, no, I'm not talking about that sham of a stunt where he was going to hang upside-down for a while. That's not even magic, that's just a dumb stunt. Seriously though, he used to do some really cool street magic but now what does he do: freeze himself, hold his breath underwater, stand on a pole, and hang upside-down.

Ok back to my real point of this post. During the airing of his "Dive of Death" on TV they showed a clip of David Blaine being punched in the stomach by Kimbo Slice.....twice. If you don't know who Kimbo Slice is, check out his resume or watch him this Saturday on CBS against Ken Shamrock.

P.S. I know, I know, being punched in the stomach is how Houdini died. Well that's actually not completely factual but it is believed to be the cause of his ruptured appendix that killed him.

The Office Season 5 Premiere

Ok I know I'm a week late on this but better late than never. Tune into The Office Season 5 Episode 2 this Thursday at 9 on NBC. For the first time, we see what happens over eight weeks of the summer, as a Dunder Mifflin weight loss initiative causes the branch to diet and become obsessed with their weight.

Lane Kiffin Fired.....Al Davis Still Owner

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Lane Kiffin was fired as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders today. Owner Al Davis let Kiffin know of the termination via a phone call. While the Raiders have been pretty bad the last few years, you can't blame it all on Kiffin. I actually think the Raiders have lots of talent and lots of potential and they could easily make some significant strides this year. Those strides will most likely come to a screeching halt but why would Al Davis care? Ohh wait he's the owner.....but he's CRAZY, so that explains it.

Oliver Stone's "W." Trailer

Oliver Stone's new film "W." is set to be released October 17. W. is a biographical film based on the life and presidency of George W. Bush. The film is written, produced, and directed by Oliver Stone, and stars Josh Brolin as George W. Bush. Here's what Oliver Stone said about the film:

I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors. [Variety]

Jenny Craig worked for Baron Davis

While Baron Davis did bring us Warriors fans such great moments as the one above (posterizing Andrei Kirilenko in the playoffs), he did also give us the run around before ultimately leaving us to sign with the Clippers. Well anyway, People magazine has revealed that Baron Davis is Jenny Craig's most recent famous recruit.

Inspired by current spokeswoman Latifah, Davis, 29, started the plan at the beginning of August to get in shape for basketball season.

"I know Queen Latifah, and when I saw her out there using it, I thought maybe I could use it, too, to work on my health and fitness goals and inspire others," he tells PEOPLE.

During the NBA off-season, Davis let his fitness slide. "In the off-season, it's kind of hard to maintain day-to-day," he says. "I don't want to get up and cook. And when I pig out, I'm the type of person where there's no limit to what I can do."

His favorite pig-out food? "Definitely Mexican," he says. "I go to Pinches Tacos in L.A., start with a carne asada burrito, and work my way down the menu." [People]

I Have to Return Some Videotapes

The movie that made me notice and start to like Christian Bale as an actor is now apparently coming to Broadway. According to The Hollywood Report, American Psycho will be adapted into a Broadway musical to hit the stage somewhere around 2010.

Producers are betting Bret Easton Ellis’ novel and screen adaptation will translate to a stage musical, with original 1980s-inspired songs and familiar covers of hits from the era.

No director, book writer or songwriters have yet been brought on board the project, but producers say they’re in early talks with some potential dramatists and hope to stage by 2010 with an eye for Broadway. Musical killers have had mixed success onstage, from the acclaimed “Sweeney Todd” and tepidly received “Assassins” to the disastrous “Carrie.”

[Producer David] Johnson said that, aside from a love of the controversial 1991 Simon & Schuster bestseller, his main inspiration for staging the project is “the great economic divide in this country.” Citing his years as a Wall Street lawyer in the ’80s, he said he’s aiming for a tone that’s “very real, (though) obviously exaggerated.” [THR]

Can Google's G1 Smart Phone Be More Than an Apple Knockoff?

From AdAge.com

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- With a touch screen, a 3G high-speed network and an application store full of third-party-developed tools, the new "Google phone" has elicited numerous comparisons to Apple's iPhone. But for Google's Android mobile-operating system to be successful, it needs its phones to be much more than the first viable iPhone competitor.

Google, T-Mobile and Taiwan-based handset manufacturer HTC today announced the first phone created with Google's Android operating system. The HTC Dream -- which goes on sale Oct. 22 in the U.S. through T-Mobile under the name G1 -- generally got high marks from bloggers and analysts, who praised the high-resolution screen (like the iPhone, web pages can be viewed horizontally or vertically), tight integration with Google products such as Gmail and Maps, and a flip-out keyboard for those who never got used to the iPhone's virtual type pad.

Simplifying the mobile market
Google's real goal with Android is to simplify the mobile market and allow handset makers and developers to more easily create great devices with useful applications -- in turn persuading some of the 82% of mobile subscribers who don't use smart phones to buy such devices and use the internet. Google sees mobile devices as being far more ubiquitous than computers, and the more consumers it can get to go online via their phones, the better, arguably, for companies who make money via online advertising. (Google CEO Eric Schmidt is so bullish on this he called mobile "the re-creation of the internet.")

Such phones are also good for marketers, explained Dean McRobie, exec director of technology at Organic. Mobile today, he said, is "not easy to work with. We have a huge, multifaceted community of devices. ... Where Android starts to become interesting is in bringing together this community and saying it's in everyone's benefit to have open standards and capabilities for mobile device."

But the phone is still relatively expensive for the average Joe, at $179 plus a voice and data plan. That's a scant $20 cheaper than the iPhone and, by adding on iPhone-comparable memory, for instance, could actually make the G1 more expensive than the iPhone and leads to questions of just how much impact Google's move into mobile will have.

As Google Mobile Product Manager Sumit Agarwal explained Android earlier to Ad Age: "Google's interest is in getting people to use the net more. We want people to have access to our services. We want the world to have access to the world's information. There are 3 billion mobile phones out there, far more than the number of PCs. ... We view it not as a 'nice to have' but as a survival imperative to provide our services to users via whatever device they want."

What others have done
Other big web players have gone different routes: Microsoft offers a mobile version of its popular Windows operating system, while Yahoo has shunned the OS model, instead creating a development language that can modify websites and applications to fit the device on which they're being used. And AOL last year bought a third-party mobile ad network.

Research firm Strategy Analytics estimated that Google's Android smart phones would reach 400,000 units in the quarter, for a 4% market share. According to ComScore M:Metrics, 19.9 million Americans have a smart phone, up 121% since July 2007, led by Apple's iPhone. Of course, the focus for Google is not just the G1 but the many other Android phones that Google hopes will come after it.

That's also the focus for early Android developers.

"We're big fans of the open nature of Android and the ability it gives us to know our application will work anywhere," said Alexander Muse, CEO of Big in Japan, which created a comparison-shopping Android app called Shop Savvy. "This particular device from HTC is nice and we like it. But at end of day we're programming for Android, not for a particular phone or handset."

We Could All Learn Something from Evan Tanner

While I'm the first to admit that I'm a big fan of all things mixed martial arts I try not to post too many things relating to the sport on this site. I realize most people don't care much about MMA, but I think Evan Tanner was an inspiration to many and had lots to teach the world about being yourself and following your dreams.

Last week when I found out the news that 37 year old former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner was found dead, I was shocked. Evan Tanner wasn't the biggest name in the UFC or the best fighter but he was a very interesting and original person that had lots to share with the world.

Many referred to him as a "journeyman" and mmajunkie.com described him this way:

At one point in his life, he led a nomadic existence, bumping from one odd job to another, everything from bouncer to contractor. However, living life to the fullest was a constant. Whether surfing, sailing, four-wheeling or overindulging, Tanner's life rarely moved in slow motion

During his travels Tanner created a blog on his website and later blogged for SpikeTV where he wrote about everything from fighting to life and spirituality. As news of his death spread I began to notice people posting their favorite excerpts from his postings all over the internet. Here are some of those:
And to think, there are still places in the world where man has not been, where he has left no footprints, where the mysteries stand secure, untouched by human eyes. I want to go to these places, the quiet, timeless, ageless places, and sit, letting silence and solitude be my teachers.

It is a shame that in this society we've been taught to judge a man's worth by what he owns instead of who he is. Everything is surface, and so few look beyond it. A man will sell his soul, he will lie, cheat and steal, for money. If he has it, he can buy respect. Wear the right clothes, drive the right car, have the right friends, that's all that matters. Our lives are consumed in a selfish, self absorbed quest for possessions, the latest and the best in a never-ending cycle until the day we die. We forget what it means to be truly human. We forget the things that really matter. We lose the magic of what life should be.

I won't live by rules that make no sense to me.

I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I feel, I will feel everything. When I love, I will love with everything.

There was a time when I was younger that I didn't know any better than to be a liar, a cheater, and a thief. I have since learned to despise those things. I have had great friendships. I have had great loves. I have been a lover, I have been a son, a brother, and a friend. And I was once a world champion.

Believe in yourself. Believe in your own potential for greatness. Believe that you can change the world. It is something that is within each of us. Believe in the power of one.

BPAs Are No Good

Suspected of being hazardous to humans since the 1930s, concerns about the use of Bisphenol A, or BPA, in consumer products grabbed headlines in 2008 when several governments issued reports questioning its safety, and some retailers pulled products made from it off their shelves.

The main focus of BPA scrutiny has been focused on baby bottles and products to be used by young children, as they are the most vulnerable to BPA's reproductive health effects. Today, a study released by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that higher levels of BPA increased risk of developing heart disease and diabetes more than two fold.

Well if you are somewhat freaking out about the amount of BPA you've ingested over the years, I was right there with you. I was using Nalgene's and various other plastic containers multiple times to store and carry liquids and even a few times probably used them store hot liquids (a big no-no). This coupled with the fact that I was a chronic bottle water drinker, meant I was harming myself and the environment.

Recently, I was turned onto the company above, Klean Kanteen. The reusable, lightweight, and risk free stainless steel Klean Kanteen was introduced in 2004 to encourage better health, hydration, and environmental responsibility.

•Better Health: Klean Kanteens are made from #304 stainless steel, the material of choice in the food processing, dairy, and brewery industries. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert, sanitary, toxin-free, and non-leaching.

•Hydration: It’s vital for life.

•Environmental Responsibility: Klean Kanteens are the stainless steel alternative to plastics. Plastics in landfills and oceans are one of the most alarming of today’s environmental stories.

America's Got Talent?...Well, some do.

For those of you who have been following the popular show, "America's Got Talent" on NBC, you have been able to see Kaitlyn Maher, a four year old singer who has been winning over the hearts of many, and is likely to reach the finals. It is heartwarming watching this little girl sing, and I wish nothing but the best for her.

I guess some (like Maher) are born destined for stardom, while others (see below) could definitely use some work. At least Kronenbourg got a nice plug here, also I heard the guy in this ad is a former footballer... go figure.

Jerry Seinfeld? Churro?

Ad Age only gives the new Microsoft Shoe Circus video with Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld 2 stars but for whatever reason I think it's funny in a goofy way. I like the ad, maybe because it just seems so against anything typical of Microsoft. It pretty much makes no real sense in relation to any products (unless they really are coming out with a line of computers made of cake)but what the hell. Check it out:

Also of Note: UFC Lightheavyweight fighter Rashad Evans wore a t-shirt with this same mugshot on it this past weekend during his walkout to the Octagon before his knockout victory against Chuck Liddell. Random coincidence?

Quantum of Solace is the 22nd James Bond film by EON Productions, due for release in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2008 and in North America on 14 November. Johnny Depp & Philip Seymour Hoffman in Dark Knight Sequel

In what may be the biggest casting spoiler in recent film history, Michael Caine has revealed that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman will be playing the two villains in the sequel to The Dark Knight, reportedly titled, Gotham. Director Christopher Nolan has been in hiding since TDK's release, and has been notoriously secretive and non-committal about a possible sequel. That all changed when Caine gave an interview at the Toronto Film Festival on Monday. Splash Page MTV reports:

In an interview with MTV News conducted just hours ago at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine - there to promote "Is There Anybody There?" - seemed to confirm rumors that the next installment of the "Batman" film franchise will feature two very well-known names playing the roles of The Riddler and The Penguin. "They've already got them in mind," said Caine, when asked who he'd like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. "It's Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper." So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids, right? Except for one thing: according to the actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself. "I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, 'Are we going to make another one?' They said yeah. I said, 'How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says 'I'll tell you how you top Heath - Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.' I said, 'Shit, they've done it again!"

Hole in the Wall

While enjoying the Bears/Colts game Sunday night my friends and I were bombarded by commercials for Fox's new series, Hole in the Wall. So the premise of the show looked pretty ridiculous, fit yourself through a moving hole in a foam wall. Apparently the show was such a hit in Australia that they decided it needed to come to the US. I doubt the show will be around more than a few more episodes but it definitely lends itself well to YouTube clips of people getting smacked by the wall and taking a tumble into the water. Here are a few choice clips I found:

Tom Brady Hurt, Fantasy Footballers CRY

It's likely that if you had Tom Brady on your fantasy football team you used a 1st round pick to land the 2007 NFL MVP quarterback. If this is the case, you may want to sit down. Sources close to the Patriots say that Brady will miss the rest of the season with an ACL tear in his left knee.

During the first quarter of the 2008 season opener, Brady was hurt as he stepped up in the pocket to make a throw to wideout Randy Moss. Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard, who was on the ground, lunged forward and struck Brady’s leg, which buckled as he released the ball.

My advice to Tom Brady owners is go out and pick up Matt Cassel (Brady's backup) as quick as you can. If Cassel has already been taken by someone else then its OK to cry because you're fantasy team is in a lot of trouble.

Here Comes Google Chrome....

Google Chrome is an open source web browser developed by Google. The name is derived from the graphical user interface frame, or "chrome", of web browsers. The open source project behind Google Chrome is known as Chromium.

A beta version for Microsoft Windows was released on 2 September 2008 in 43 languages. Mac OS X and Linux versions are under development and are scheduled to be released after the Windows version.

The release announcement was originally scheduled for 3 September 2008, and a comic by Scott McCloud was to be sent to journalists and bloggers explaining the features of and motivations for the new browser. Copies intended for Europe were shipped early and German blogger Philipp Lenssen of Google Blogoscoped made a scanned copy of the 38-page comic available on his website after receiving it on 1 September 2008. Google subsequently made the comic available on Google Books and their site and referenced it on its official blog along with an explanation for the early release.

The Filipino Steve Perry

In case you haven't heard, Steve Perry quit Journey along time ago. Also, you may have not heard that Journey found their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda, by seeing his videos on YouTube.

Videos of Arnel Pineda and his cover band, The Zoo, began showing up on YouTube at the beginning of this year. Neal Schon of Journey saw the videos and got in contact with Arnel. Arnel was flown out to the Bay Area, where he auditioned and a few months later was announced the new lead singer of Journey. The performance videos below are from Arnel's debut show with Journey on February 21, 2008 at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival held at the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater in Viña del Mar, Chile.
