Helio Gracie, the father of BJJ and Gracie family patriarch, dead at 95

[from MMAJunkie]

Helio Gracie, the father of BJJ and Gracie family patriarch, dead at 95
by Dann Stupp on Jan 29, 2009 at 12:45 pm ET

Helio Gracie, the Gracie family patriarch and instrumental figure in the rise of early mixed martial arts, has passed away at the age of 95.

With his older brother Carlos, Helio, who died early Thursday in Rio de Janiero, helped create what we know today as Brazilian jiu jitsu.

With a slight build and weighing no more than 150 pounds, Gracie adapted traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu principles so that leverage and position could make up size differences between opponents.

Called Gracie jiu jitsu, which son Rorion used to help launch the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993, the fighting style would soon prove dominant. Another one of Helio's nine sons, UFC hall-of-famer Royce, successfully implemented the strategies in early UFC events despite facing significantly larger opponents.

Royce's and the fighting style's success sparked the explosion of modern jiu jitsu among the martial-arts world.

The discipline, now better known as Brazilian jiu jitsu, remains a key foundation in any MMA education.

Helio, himself, also fought, oftentimes to prove jiu jitsu's dominance over disciplines such as boxing, wrestling and judo. Many of the fights took place in front of remarkably large crowds as Helio became one of Brazil's biggest sports stars.

In one of martial arts' first super fights, nearly 20,000 people watched Helio fight Masahiko Kimura in 1951. Kimura, who outweighed his opponent by nearly 80 pounds, eventually won the fight with a submission that now bears his name.

Four years later, in his final match, Helio fought former student Valdemar Santana in a nearly four-hour Vale Tudo ("no holds barred") match. Santana won the fight after Helio tired, but his nephew Carlos eventually avenged the loss, a common occurrence for a clan committed to the family's honor.

Helio remained a fixture in MMA circles as the family continued his legacy in recent decades. He was oftentimes seen ringside as Gracie members flourished in top MMA organizations around the world.

This is the new single from Eminem's upcoming album Relapse. I was getting worried there for a while, I didn't know if Eminem had hung it up or not. Hopefully Relapse will actually come out in a few months and we won't have a situation like Dr. Dre's Detox, which has been delayed over and over again.

Obama tells Arabic network US is 'not your enemy'

Part 1
Part 2

President Barack Obama chose an Arabic satellite TV network for his first formal television interview as president, part of a concerted effort to repair relations with the Muslim world that were damaged under the previous administration.

Obama cited his Muslim background and relatives, practically a taboo issue during the U.S. presidential campaign, and said in the interview, which aired Tuesday, that one of his main tasks was to communicate to Muslims "that the Americans are not your enemy."

The interview on the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya news channel aired as Obama's new envoy to the region, former Sen. George J. Mitchell, arrived in Egypt on Tuesday for a visit that will also take him to Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Obama said the U.S. had made mistakes in the past but "that the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago, there's no reason why we can't restore that." [via Yahoo! News]

[via Wired.com]

Mr. Know-It-All: Hi-Def Etiquette, Facebook Friends-in-Law, Wiki Errors

My only friend without an HDTV has invited me to his Super Bowl party. Hi-def sets have gotten pretty cheap. Is it rude to ask him to upgrade? Building bridges that can withstand anything.

Ask away, but remember that in these financially brutal times, even the gainfully employed are living lean. You might soften your approach and start by inviting your pal over to witness hi-def sports in all their glory. (You do have an HDTV yourself, right?) Maybe he'll see the light and pony up for an HD rig right before the big game. He wouldn't be the first.

But if your friend still resists dropping the cash, don't back out on his shindig. Yes, it's tough to revert to standard-def fuzz if you're accustomed to seeing every blade of grass. But, come on—has the splendor of all those pixels really made you that antisocial? The attraction of the party should be camaraderie, not the quality of the screen.

Joseph Whip of TVPredictions.com puts it well: "While I love HD, I do prefer friendship and human interaction." Plan on soothing the pain by knocking back a few extra beers before kickoff. Once the cheering starts, your technological hang-ups will be quickly forgotten.

When her mother recently friended me on Facebook, my girlfriend freaked and demanded that I defriend Mom at once. Should I comply or hold firm and risk hurting our relationship?

Your darling's dismay seems excessive, but you need to gather some intelligence before taking a stand. There could be a painful backstory here—an instance, perhaps, in which maternal interference ruined a promising romance.

Ask your girlfriend if her reaction is due to past meddling. If she has a tragic tale to relate, reassure her that you won't stand for such shenanigans. Make it clear that you'll instantly defriend Mom if she starts getting up to her old nosy tricks. A Facebook message with the subject line "Wedding Plans?" Buh-bye.

But the request might have less to do with Mom's misdeeds than a feeling that parental presence sucks the fun out of Facebook. "Using Facebook is a little like going to a party, and who wants to go to a party where their mom is standing in the corner?" says E. A. Vander Veer, author of Facebook: The Missing Manual.

By accepting Mrs. Girlfriend into your inner circle, you tacitly agreed to keep things on your profile rated G—or at least PG-13. Your gal simply may not relish the prospect of censoring her Wall posts to you.

If that's the essence of the gripe, gently resist her demand. Explain that preserving your right to Facebook raunchiness isn't worth hurting her mother's feelings. And point out that, hey, it's only Facebook—it's not like you let Mom install a webcam in your bedroom.

There's a serious error in the Wikipedia entry on me—they totally botched my birthplace. I want to correct the mistake, but I know you're not supposed to edit your own entry. What to do?

Congratulations on being deemed notable enough to merit a Wikipedia article. This implies that there are independent news sources out there with biographical information about you. Do these pieces have your birthplace correct? If so, create a note on your entry's Talk page with links to this evidence; with any luck, a Wikipedia contributor will notice it and make the necessary fix. If time is of the essence and you seriously believe the fate of the free world hangs in the balance, go ahead and edit the entry yourself. Just be sure to record everything on the Talk page, to avoid charges of sock puppetry.

Be ready, however, for some back-and-forth if the article's creator has a source for the misinformation. If this contributor won't relent, drop an email to info-en-q@wikimedia.org and explain the situation. Be brief and provide links to reputable sources that have accurate data.

In a worst-case scenario, the erroneous birthplace may have been bouncing around the World Wide Echo Chamber for so long that no linkable news articles have it right. "In cases like this, we suggest individuals try to correct the sources rather than insert unsourced information to our project," says Cary Bass, volunteer coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. That means your beef isn't with whoever created your Wikipedia entry but with the lazy journalists who've been flubbing your life's story all along. Rain your fury upon them.

Gigapan: Obama's Inauguration Photo

This is pretty amazing. I mean it is from a weird side angle and I'm not exactly sure the point of it, but it's cool. Make sure you do lots of zooming so you experience how crisp and detailed the photo really is. Here's what the site says:

I made this Gigapan image from the north press platform during President Obama's inaugural address at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC on January 20, 2009. It's made up of 220 images and the final image size is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels.

** UPDATE 1/25/09 -- Thank you for the overwhelming enthusiasm for this photo. I am happy to announce that high quality prints will be available shortly. To be notified, send a blank email to: pano@davidbergman.net

By the way, here's what a Gigapan is:
GigaPan consists of three technological developments: a robotic camera mount for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images using a standard digital camera; custom software for constructing very high-resolution gigapixel panoramas; and, a new type of website for exploring, sharing and commenting on gigapixel panoramas and the detail our users will discover within them. The GigaPan website allows hosting and sharing all kinds of panoramas, and so the robotic GigaPan mount is recommended but is certainly not required to be part of this community.

Obamicons Are Here

Well to continue with all the presidential hype surrounding yesterday's inauguration I bring you a new trend Swiffering the nation....Obamicons.

Obamicons? Yes, I understand you are probably confused but it will all make sense once you see one. Remember the Obama "HOPE" poster you saw everywhere?
Well, an Obamicon is basically taking this same design and applying it any and everything. Here is my top 10 favorite Obamicons:

Check out all the other Obamicons HERE

President Obama's Security

Ummm yea so it's probably not a good idea to try and mess with our president. I mean America is the most powerful nation in the world so you can imagine the security we have surrounding Barack Obama is simply mind blowing. Here's a little look:

Obama's Presidential Limo

According to Presidential vehicle experts, the new limo is a beast-like General Motors truck-based Cadillac that is so tough it's like a 'rolling tank with windows.'

Among the vehicle's main features are windows that are 5 inches thick, 19.5-inch Goodyear RHS tires (same as super tough trucks), and possibly even a lock safety mechanism that seals off the car like a bank vault in case of an emergency.

Because the Secret Service keeps details of the limo understandably private, even the most knowledgeable security experts don't really know how much gadgety tech is being installed in the new ride. But it's not stopping them making a few informed guesses.

In an interview with CNN, security expert Ken Lucci says rubber gaskets likely protect the car against chemical weapons and that the body will be made out of a tougher material than before. The most recent limo used by President Bush used some combination of a dual hardness steel, aluminum, titanium and even ceramics to break up possible projectiles. And there are usually steel overlaps that cover any gaps a door might leave.

Despite the immense secrecy, reports have leaked that the limo also comes with a 10-CD changer, which will inevitably end up playing Obama favorites like Steve Wonder and Bob Dylan. We're surprised there's no Blu-ray or Wii in there, but we're pretty sure of one thing: The limo will be a Zune-free zone, especially considering the most recent reports. [Wired]

Other Security
And if the new presidential limo wasn't impressive enough here is the kind of firepower the black SUVs that follow Obama's limo will be packing.

Here's some more info on that bad ass gun:
Dillon Aero, Inc. is the manufacturer of the Air Force GAU-2B/A (Army M134) 7.62mm minigun. It is a multi-barrel machine gun with a high rate of fire (over 3,000 rounds per minute), employing Gatling-style rotating barrels with an external power source.

OBAMA

If you missed yesterday's inauguration then you FAIL!

Here's some interesting info from yesterday from Cynopsis Digital:
Combining live television with the interactivity of the web proved to be a powerful lure for two major media and web brands yesterday. CNN.com's live streaming application, which was accompanied by a Facebook widget that allowed members to view comments from their peanut gallery of friends, set web traffic records yesterday serving a total of 18.8 million total online viewers as of 1 pm ET. (This shattered CNN's previous record of 5.3 million streams set on Election Day.) CNN served more than 1.3 million concurrent live streams just as President Obama began his address. This nearly doubled the streaming output of YouTube Live back in November of approximately 700,000 concurrent viewers as measured by Akamai, believed to be the previous industry high water mark. Facebook averaged more than 4,000 status updates per hour Tuesday morning, peaking at 8,500 updates/minute during the President's speech. Meanwhile Twitter, which survived without any major outages, saw 5x its normal tweet rate.

The Carolina Panthers & Jake Delhomme were "Losers" Last Weekend

Talk about kicking a man when he's down. It was painful enough to watch the press conference where the media proceeded to rip Jake Delhomme for being almost completely responsible for the Panthers playoff loss. The guy had the worst day of his life broadcast live on national TV, isn't that punishment enough? Apparently it isn't, someone decided to make this little video for Jake.

Shark Footage from Strange Wilderness

So I just sent back Strange Wilderness to Netflix and while it wasn't that great of a movie (Happy Madison Productions has done much better) it did have some pretty hilarious parts. In short, the movie is about a guy who takes over his dad's successful and well loved nature show when he dies and runs it into the ground because he and his friends are losers who know nothing about nature. OK now that the synopsis is over time for you to enjoy the amazing shark footage from the movie. If you watch this video and think it's stupid, watch it a few more times, I promise it will grow on you.

Evolution of Dance 2....the sequel

Like all great things (ie Home Alone & Bring It On) the sequel never lives up to the original. The most viewed video in the history of YouTube, the Evolution of Dance performed by comedian Judson Laipply finally has its sequel. Creating a sequel to a video that has been viewed over 100 million times is no easy feat and the 2nd one isn't bad, but it also doesn't have that something special the first one had. The video is doing well so far, with over 1 million views in just over a day but we will see if it has the staying power to challenge its predecessor.

Lady GaGa - Just Dance Music Video

In keeping with the theme I started this morning of posting catchy songs, here's some song that's on the radio every single time I turn it on. No idea who this Lady GaGa girl is but it is good to see that this Colby O'Donis character looks much less like a guido in this video. Not that being jacked and tan is a bad thing.

Lady Gaga featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance

Geico: Great Song, Terrible Mascot

Most likely you've seen some of the new Geico commercials featuring their new mascot/spokesman/useless wad of bills, Kash.

So, it's come to this. Forget about the caveman and the gecko. Geico has introduced a new commercial character that requires no budget for actors, makeup, animation or voice talent. "Kash" is just a stack of bills with eyeballs, designed to get down to the basics of how much customers can save on car insurance with Geico. In two new spots by The Martin Agency—one set in a corporate meeting room, the other in a restaurant—the wad of greenbacks shows little in the way of personality. It doesn't talk, walk or earn interest. It just sits there, inert, begging for viewers to find the concept cute or kitschy. It's not weird cool—it's weird weird. [AdFreak]
While Kash may be a pretty weak mascot compared to the gecko or the cavemen they did pick a great song to feature in every Kash commercial. AdFreak will disagree with me here but Rockwell's 1984 hit "Somebody's Watching Me" comes in at the end of every ad and is pretty much it's only saving grace. It's just so catchy.

Weak Password Brings 'Happiness' to Twitter Hacker

An 18-year-old hacker with a history of celebrity pranks has admitted to Monday's hijacking of multiple high-profile Twitter accounts, including President-Elect Barack Obama's, and the official feed for Fox News.

The hacker, who goes by the handle GMZ, told Threat Level on Tuesday he gained entry to Twitter's administrative control panel by pointing an automated password-guesser at a popular user's account. The user turned out to be a member of Twitter's support staff, who'd chosen the weak password "happiness."

Cracking the site was easy, because Twitter allowed an unlimited number of rapid-fire log-in attempts.

"I feel it's another case of administrators not putting forth effort toward one of the most obvious and overused security flaws," he wrote in an IM interview. "I'm sure they find it difficult to admit it."

The hacker identified himself only as an 18-year-old student on the East Coast. He agreed to an interview with Threat Level on Tuesday after other hackers implicated him in the attack.

The intrusion began unfolding Sunday night, when GMZ randomly targeted the Twitter account belonging to a woman identified as "Crystal." He found Crystal only because her name had popped up repeatedly as a follower on a number of Twitter feeds. "I thought she was just a really popular member," he said.

Using a tool he authored himself, he launched a dictionary attack against the account, automatically trying English words. He let the program run overnight, and when he checked the results Monday morning at around 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time, he found he was in Crystal's account.

That's when he realized that Crystal was a Twitter staffer, and he now had the ability to access any other Twitter account by simply resetting an account holder's password through the administrative panel. He also realized he hadn't used a proxy to hide his IP address, potentially making him traceable. He said he hadn't used a proxy because he didn't think the intrusion was important enough to draw law-enforcement attention, and "didn't think it would make headlines."

He said he decided not to use other hacked accounts personally. Instead he posted a message to Digital Gangster, a forum for hackers and former hackers, offering access to any Twitter account by request.

"I ... threw the hack away by providing DG free accounts," he said.

He also posted a video he made of his hack to prove he had administrative access to Twitter. [Wired.com]

Yelp user faces lawsuit over negative review

Well this is pretty damn crazy. Who knew you could get sued for giving someone a bad review on Yelp? Doesn't surprise me though because honestly, what can't you sue for?

San Franciscan Christopher Norberg went to a chiropractor after being injured in a car accident in 2006. After a disagreement with the chiropractor over billing, he posted a negative review of the business on Yelp suggesting that the doctor was dishonest. Now he is facing a defamation lawsuit that could chill self-expression on the popular gripe Web site.

"If Christopher loses then anyone on Yelp who writes a negative review better be careful," said Michael Blacksburg, an attorney representing Norberg. "This strikes at the heart of Yelp's business model and other Web sites that provide a bulletin board for people to state what they think of businesses in their community."

"This is clearly Christopher Norberg's version of conversations with the doctor relating to a billing dispute and his opinion of how the doctor was behaving," Blacksburg said on Tuesday. "This is clear opinion that falls squarely within constitutionally protected speech."

Eric Nordskog, the attorney for chiropractor Steven Biegel, said the case comes down to whether Norberg's comments are considered statements of fact or opinions.

Cristiano Ronaldo Crashes Ferrari

The lucky Manchester Utd winger escaped without a scratch after the Italian sportscar was smashed to smithereens in a crash early today.

Witnesses said his car was a "mangled wreck" – and police say it is a write-off.

Ronaldo was travelling through a tunnel at Manchester Airport when he hit the wall – sending parts of the barrier flying across the dual carriageway.

Ronaldo was able to get out of the vehicle himself and was spoken to by police at the scene after the smash at 10.20am.

A witness said: "The front of Ronaldo's car was completely mangled. There was metal all over the road and debris - and we had to dodge our way through it.

“Ronaldo was just standing at the side of the road looking forlorn and bewildered.

The Snuggie: The Worst Product Ever Made

I'm totally serious that I laughed out loud at the funny parody infomercial for some stupid blanket called The Snuggie. My joy and laughter turned to sadness and anger when I realized the infomercial was actually real and they were ACTUALLY trying to get people to buy this stupid blanket. Wow, a blanket with sleeves, my life is changed forever.

Be amazed by the real infomercial for The Snuggie below. My favorite part is the whole family wearing The Snuggie at some outdoor sporting event. They look like they are in some weird cult and about to drink some Kool-Aid before going to outer space.

The Snuggie infomercial

The Cult of Snuggie
"Is your life shrouded in a cold blue haze? Do arrows with $ symbols appear when you try to raise the thermostat? Is your blanket slightly too small? If so please join us, the Cult of Snuggie. There will be punch and pie."

Instead of buying a Snuggie, may I suggest: Walk to your bathroom, open your toilet, dump the entire contents of your wallet into said toilet, flush...then slap yourself in the face for thinking a blanket with sleeves is a good idea.

So many disasters: the economy, Sarah Palin, Indiana Jones 4... wait, did I already mention Sarah Palin? Yes it was terrible but nonetheless, a great year for comedy source material.

Nonetheless, I would be remiss if I didn't put together my 5 favorite stories of the year. Enjoy!
