Vista Users Get Punk'D

In an attempt to counter all the negative word of mouth about Windows Vista, Microsoft has launched an online campaign called the "Mojave Experiment."

The campaign is similar to those Carl's Junior commercials where after eating a "restaurant" burger, diners find out the food they raved about was actually fast food.

After bad mouthing Windows Vista, the people are then asked to try new "Windows Mojave." After they sing their praises for Mojave they find out that they have actually been using Vista.

Of course these videos don't have the kind of entertainment value as people freaking out on hidden camera because they can't get a Whopper but I still find them interesting. Personally, I've never had any problems with Vista even though many websites tell me that my system should have crashed 10 times over by now.

New Harry Potter, woo

http://www.aol.com.au/movies/harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince.jhtml

A new Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie trailer/teaser premiered recently showing a young Voldemort.

"A new trailer for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" gives a glimpse of the young Tom Riddle, who grows up to become the wizarding world's most malevolent force, Lord Voldemort."

http://www.suntimes.com/entertainment/movies/1080879,CST-FTR-potter30.article

Interestingly, the old Voldemort is played by Ralph Fiennes, while the young Voldemort is played by Fiennes' nephew, Hero. Director David Yates said that the fact Hero is related to Ralph wasn't the primary reason for choosing him to play the villain's younger self.

Harry Potter, the boy wizard created by JK Rowling, has grown in popularity ever since the first book was published in 1997. "As of June 2008, the seven book series has sold more than 400 million copies[3] and the books have been translated into 67 languages."

"In November 2007, the magazine Advertising Age estimated the total value of the Harry Potter brand at roughly $15 billion (£7 billion).["

All five Harry Potter films rank to date in the Top 20 of the inflation-adjusted list of all time top grossing films, and this next one is sure to not dissappoint.

Junior the Human Slinky

Watching some the tricks and stunts on the current MTV show "America's Best Dance Crew" prompted me to do some Googling of breakdancing and b-boy videos. Some of the results were mediocre and mildly entertaining but then I came across a few videos of a b-boy named Junior.

http://www.b-boyjunior.com/

From what I gather Junior aka Buana is a b-boy from France and is part of the Wanted Posse Krew. He has won various championships including the World Breakdancing Championships 'Battle of the Year.'

Most would quickly say that there is no way breakdancing is a sport or that its top competitors are in the same league as NBA, NFL, or MLB superstars but after watching these videos its hard to say that Junior is not one of most gifted athletes I've ever seen.

Watch for the no-footed push ups, they are kind of his signature.....yes I did say no-footed push ups.

NASA Plans on Permanent Presence on the Moon

"'We're going back, and this time we're going to stay,'' S. Pete Worden, director of NASA Ames, said in remarks opening the lunar science conference. "This is the first step in settling the solar system.'' "

Apparently, we're going to start living on the moon....

A conference that officially started yesterday in Silicon Valley at NASA's Lunar Science Institute brings together over 400 of the world's top scientists to decide what we should do when we reach the moon.

"I think we should study rocks!"

"Well I think we should study water!"

"No you idiots! We should study the air up there!"

all together: "You Moron! There is no air up there!"

"oh...."

It probably won't sound like that but who knows right? Actually, the conference deals with what science should be done on the moon when we get there. "For the next three days, Silicon Valley will be the base for planning humankind's return to the moon, as more than 400 scientists from around the world assemble at NASA's Ames Research Center for a conference on what type of science should be done when astronauts revisit Earth's nearest neighbor. It could happen in the decade after NASA retires the space shuttle in 2010 and begins flying a new generation of rocket booster. And it won't be a temporary visit, NASA officials and scientists said Sunday. The United States, they said, focus on creating a permanent presence on the moon, using it as a training platform for missions to Mars and beyond. "

Xbox 360 to Stream Netflix Videos

While not exactly a cultural shockwave, it's definitely a complementary element of the digitial cultural phenomenon of the twentieth century: Video Streaming. On Monday, Netflix and Xbox announced a deal to steam videos via the Xbox 360 interface.

Netflix revolutionized the movie rental business with it's DVD shipping business model centered on a monthly subscription service. Users create an online queue of movies they would like to have delivered to their home and when those videos become available, Netflix ships them.

Some background from Wikipedia: "Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) is the largest online DVD rental service, offering flat rate rental-by-mail and online streaming to customers in the United States. Established in 1997 and headquartered in Los Gatos, California, it has amassed a collection of 100,000 titles and approximately 8.2 million subscribers.[2] The company has more than 55 million discs and ships 1.9 million of them to customers each day, on average.[2] Netflix previously claimed to spend about $300 million a year on postage. On February 25, 2007, Netflix announced the billionth DVD delivery.[3][4] It topped the ForeSee Results’ Top 100 Online Retail Satisfaction Index with an American Customer Satisfaction Index score of 86, well over the industry average of 75.[5]"

The new agreement with Microsoft's Xbox system will surely decrease those postage expenses, and increase revenue significantly. According to an article on Yahoo News by Barbara Ortutay, Microsoft has sold 10 million Xboxs in the United States alone, and 50% of those who own Xbox pay $50 a year for an Xbox Live Gold Membership. The Gold Membership will be needed in order for someone to stream Netflix movies on the 360, as well as a $9 membership Netflix plan which includes unlimited streaming.

The deal is significant because it continues this streaming of digital avenues into the marketplace. Continuously, consumers have more and more abilities when it comes to consumption of media. The new digital platform for consumption is the all-in-one console: Gaming, movies, television, music, even news is making a debut via gaming consoles. Why is this culturally significant? Because as a culture we continue to drift into this digital medium, like a digital revolution. Not to be confused with the Industrial Revolution, the digital revolution will include much less physical labor, and a lot more code.....

iPhone has Competition: GPhone, Android, LG Dare

With the new iPhone 3G out on the streets, and iPhone 2.0 dazzling people with applications and what not, it brings to mind questions like, "Is this the only thing we can come up with?" or "is iPhone the only phone that I will like?" or "which phone is really the best phone? is it really iPhone"...AND..."when will someone make a phone that has all the same features?"

Well, as of now, iPhone has a few competitors like the LG Shine and Dare, the Voyager, the Prada, etc...

But all of these phones aren't nearly as popular as the iPhone, and can't really compete.

However, when we look forward through the next 6-12 months, we can expect some true competitors to come at the iPhone... hopefully, for competition and capitalism's sake.

iPhone Killer possibilities include Google's GPhone, Samsung's F700, and anything else people can come up with, including phones that could run Windows Mobile. The interesting background fight going on right now is the software war. While Apple's Mac OS is dominating with the iPhone, Google is busy developing Android, its open source mobile platform, and Microsoft the software veteran has confirmed that it's main focus is Windows Mobile and not a Zune Phone or any device of it's own. As with the PC market, Microsoft is hoping device manufacturers will create competing phones that will run Windows Mobile. It could be a mistake on their part, but that's how Microsoft works.

Many people have qualms about the iPhone even after its 2.0 update. It would be nice to see some competitors take advantage of these issues and ramp up their devices to grapple with the iPhone monster. Sooner or later someone is going to make the ultimate device: computer, phone, digital communication device, video camera, digital camera, 3G mobile broadband powerhouse. The ultimate device in your hands. Personally, I'd like to see a phone with 100GB of storage, 3G super connection, wi-fi to the max, infra-red keyboard, 5mp camera with video capture (a good one to replace my digital camera), laser projector, ipod, complete email and address sync capabilities, the works. And it has to fit in the pocket of my wranglers haha.. jk I don't wear wranglers, but some people do.

iPhone 3G is BIG....or is it iPhone 2.0?

The new Apple iPhone 3G came out today to much fanfare and anticipation. Things didn't go off without a hitch, as a software issue made it difficult to activate the phones in store. However that didn't stop the masses of people who were just throwing their wallets at Apple and AT&T stores starting at 8am this morning to feel the sleek device in the palms of their hands. iPhone 3G is supposed to be the most popular phone ever to date because of its modern technology and killer price.

From MercuryNews: "The second coming of the iPhone arrived at 8 a.m. today at Apple outlets and other stores in Silicon Valley, but lines of buoyant fans were still forming hours later. And an earlier problem reported today with Apple's iTunes software that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store seemed to have been resolved. Fans at the Apple stores in Valley Fair and Palo Alto didn't seem too bothered by the temporary glitch. "I'm very happy. It was worth the wait," said Mitch McHone, the first to buy the 3G iPhone this morning at Valley Fair. By 7:30 a.m., at least 150 people had lined up at the shopping mall's Apple Store, many of them working on Apple laptops as they waited. The first person in line got there around 5 p.m. Thursday; Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak got arrived around 4 a.m. today.
A party atmosphere prevailed, with dozens of Apple employees - including one female worker with a fake Mohawk hair style and spiked boots - taking pictures of each other and the customers outside. As the magic hour approached, fans clapped rhythmically, while others were heard whooping." At $199 and $299 with a new two year contract the iPhone is more attractive than it's ever been.

But is it really just the killer price points that make the iPhone so desirable? Debuting alongside the new device is the new software for all iPhones, iPhone 2.0. On the inside, iPhone 3G is pretty similar to iPhone. However, with iPhone 2.0, iPhones everywhere are irresistable to tech junkies and the fashion conscious, and just about everybody else for that matter.

With iPhone 2.0, there are a number of improvements to the software, including support for "Exchange ActiveSync technology. ActiveSync is widely used in corporate environments to provide “push” email, calendar, and contacts to mobile devices, and has long been considered one of the iPhone’s major weaknesses." (from Macworld)

Among other corporate user additions, the 2.0 software adds support for 3rd party applications. Since the Apple Software Development Kit was released in March, developers have been busy creating applications for the new phone. Users can purchase, download and install applications on the phone itself or sync with iTunes. A number of new features and support have been added also including multiple language support for more languages, more keyboard layouts, abilities like deleting and moving multiple emails simultaneously, and more.

Nike Produces 350 Air McFlys

From an article on Yahoo! Buzz, Nike debuted the Air McFly in 1989 when Back to the Future 2 came out. Apparently, ever since consumers saw the shoes in the film, which took place largely in 2015, people have been begging Nike to produce the shoe for everyone. Nike has apparently given in, but not in the sense that people want.

The new move (making the shoes) was announced at an event recently, where Kobe Bryant pulled up in a DeLorean to showcase the kicks. Fans lined the streets, but unfortunately only 350 pairs of the shoes were made, so many went home dissapointed. However, good news! The shoes are currently selling on ebay....for $1000 bucks a pop.....ouch

The Bourne Ultimatum Spoof - Jimmy Kimmel Live

This is great. I love how show hosts are grabbing these random people and making them semi-famous.

Cooking and Cartoons

One of the staples of television in the past few years has been reality shows, and even more recently, cooking shows. It was only a matte of time before the two became friends. Top Chef and The Next Food Network Star are two of the more popular reality cooking shows. But like all things, it's not really cool until somebody is making fun of it (cue Weird Al Yankovic). So here's a funny little snippet of catoon animals on a reality cooking show, enjoy.

The Colbert Bump!

Well it's official, Stephen Colbert has proven his digital influence once again. Apparently, after mentioning Firefox 3 on his show, downloads of the new version of the popular browser spiked in apparent relation to the "Colbert Bump". This is according to a Mozilla blog called Blog of Metrics, and the post was one of the big Diggs, so at least we know Mozilla understands a little about virality. Anyhoo, according to Mozilla's data, "At minute 23 of the broadcast, Colbert said, 'Firefox 3 just got the Colbert Bump.' What happened next?... We saw a big spike in downloads exactly one and two minutes later..." see graph:
In a related article on NPR.org, "A study by San Diego political science professor James Fowler suggests there may be some truth behind the "truthiness." He shares his findings on Colbert's impact on campaign contributions with Madeleine Brand." Apparently Democratic candidates who appeared on the show received 44% more campaign contributions than their counterparts. A complete version of the report can be seen here.

Greatest Tennis Match in History

Yesterday, what likely will go down as one of the greatest tennis matches in history took place. For those of you who were unable to watch the longest-ever Wimbledon Men's Singles Final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, here is a clip of the match point and celebration that took place afterwards.
