Videos Simulate Earthquake in SF Bay Area

A major earthquake in California is a matter of when, not if. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a 62 percent chance of a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake striking somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area in the next 30 years. Extend that forecast to the entire state, and a big one is a near certainty.

When asked where the next big Bay Area quake is likely to be, most geologists will bet on the Hayward Fault, which runs along the eastern side of the bay through a densely populated area that includes Oakland, Berkeley and Hayward. The last major quake on that fault struck 140 years ago in 1868, and the average time between big ones is 140 years.

Aagard created several video simulations of Bay Area earthquakes, including the one directly above of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on the Hayward fault. The ground motion is exaggerated by 1,000 to help with the visualization. The red color indicates very violent shaking that can cause significant damage.

Seismologist Mary Lou Zoback of Risk Management Solutions in Hayward estimates a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Hayward fault quake could result in $200 billion in damage from shaking, thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of displaced people. [Wired]

Internet Classic: I Like Turtles

The "I Like Turtles" video is a short clip taken from a KGW news broadcast in Milwaukie, Oregon on May 31st, 2007. While at the Rose Festival, an unsuspecting news anchor planned on interviewing ten-year-old Jonathon Ware about his zombie face paint, but he only had three little—and infamous—words in response. The 17-second video has garnered millions of views on YouTube, inspired t-shirts with Ware's face on them, and shot the turtle-enthusiast to fame both online and in the hallways of his elementary school.

This bird's-eye view of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania was the first image ever seen by the GeoEye-1, the world's highest-resolution commercial satellite sponsored by Google, when it opened its camera door earlier this week.

The 4,300-pound satellite collected the image at noon EDT on Oct. 7 while moving from the north pole to the south pole in a 423-mile-high orbit at 17,000 miles per hour, or 4.5 miles per second. The spacecraft can take photos at a resolution of up to 41 cm -- close enough to zoom in on the home plate of a baseball diamond, according to Mark Brender, GeoEye's vice president of communications and marketing.

Since around the late 70s, the military has used high-resolution spy satellites capable of reading newspaper headlines in Red Square. But only in recent years the technology became available to the public and businesses while concurrently making dramatic strides in coverage and resolution. For example, when Google Earth launched in 2004, its imagery was low-res and spotty. But by March 2006, a third of the world population could get a bird's-eye view of their own homes in high resolution.

There's one catch for Google: While the GeoEye-1 will provide imagery to the NGA at the maximum resolution of 43 cm, Google will only receive images at a 50-cm resolution because of a government restriction, Brender explained. However, Google's partnership with GeoEye is exclusive, meaning the search-engine giant will be the only online mapping site using the satellite's photos.

A second satellite, GeoEye-2, slated to launch in 2011 or 2012, will have a resolution of 25 cm, company representatives promised. However, Google's satellite imagery will not likely get more detailed because of the 50-cm regulation.

The two interesting things I took from this:
1. What the hell does Google not have it's hands in and what do they do that doesn't work?
2. So the government has had and been using these high resolution satellites for almost 40 years, what kind of crazy technology do they have now in 2008?

As seen over on Digital Two-Footed Tackles, Nike has a new commercial that was seen during NFL games this past weekend. The ad features LaDainian Tomlinson and Troy Polamalu.

LaDainian Tomlinson and Troy Polamalu star in the new Nike football commercial "Fate", Leave Nothing. Wieden & Kennedy create another great Nike commercial and released at the perfect time as the NFL season starts to heat up after week 6.

Nike uses two of the most popular stars in the NFL in Tomlinson and Polamalu for this commercial where we see them as newborns and grow into football stars and "Fate" would lead them to finally meet in an NFL game. [GreatAds]
